What does the https on your internet browser protect?

In the days ahead you may be wondering, "Why does all of the sudden your favorite websites have a "not secure" alert on your browser?"  In a sentence it means the sites haven’t implemented HTTPS and other security protocols.  We don't know whether the intent is to sell browser certificates to website owners, or to derail traffic to websites such as Alibaba, Speedtest.net, the Daily Mail, BBC America, and IMDb.  What we do know is that Chrome Browser users will be seeing this across "unsecured" and presumably "unsafe" websites.
